Making a Difference in Dog’s Life

Editor’s note: The most wonderful part of rescuing pups is knowing that we can make a difference – and a BIG difference- in their lives. And the greatest reward is when we are able to place them in forever homes with amazing adopters.
Hello Bichon Lovers,
We hope that you, your loved ones and FurKids are staying safe and healthy —and are preparing to celebrate the holidays and welcome in a happier and healthier 2023!
The adoption of our precious pups is one of the most enjoyable aspects of rescuing! Being able to see and hear, through photos and anecdotes, how our FurKids and their families grow together and bond is always so very special. As we have now entered our 18th year we are hearing from returning adopters and families. While it is sad having to ever have to say ‘Goodbye’ to any FurKid, being able to place another one or two with a loving family that we know from the past is another reward and is deeply satisfying.
Knowing who you want to oversee the care of your FurKid(s), should that become necessary, is so very important! When you read the story of Toby and Coco (pages 1-3) you will learn that they have found a wonderful forever home and a second chance. Sadly their original guardian made no provisions for them, assuming adult children would care for them. Happily, those adult children found us and we were able to help! The article ‘Looking Out for Our FurKids’ on pages 6-8 will hopefully resonate with you and help you to avoid the situation that occurred initially for the adult children of Toby and Coco’s owner.
Each and every Bichon Bash creates memories and experiences for all of us! Each year we see familiar faces and also have the opportunity to create new friendships. Celebrating our precious pups and their adopters, raising money to continue to save lives, is the purpose behind the Bichon Bash. Please ‘join us’ on pages 4 and 5 for a sampling of the photos taken at this year’s Bash. And please put October 15, 2023 on your calendar for our next Bash!
With the holidays approaching, we wanted to remind you about the foods and household items your FurKids need to avoid. Many will be known to you however there are probably a few that are new and should be avoided. Please see that article on page 9.
As always, we invite you to help us to continue with our mission. We see more pups arriving at shelters as people return to work and post-pandemic realities shift again. These precious pups will be looking for their forever homes– and we would love for them to be adopted by members of our amazing community. We always need and welcome both new and returning fosters. If this is something you care to do, please email marti@bichonfurkids.org and know that you can truly make a difference! You can also make a difference by helping BFK in other ways. One of those is becoming a volunteer driver (see the article on page 10).
Each pup that becomes a FurKid receives what we call an adoption kit. That includes a bed, blanket, pillow, leash, collar, harness, toy, vitamins and more. No Sew blankets are ALWAYS favorites of our pups. If you, your children, grandchildren, scout troops, senior groups etc. are looking for a way to help, we invite you to check out the directions on page 11. It’s a fun activity and one that brings great joy (to those making and receiving the blankets!)
