Making a Difference in Dog’s Life
Editor’s note: The most wonderful part of rescuing pups is knowing that we can make a difference – and a BIG difference- in their lives. And the greatest reward is when we are able to place them in forever homes with amazing adopters.
Hello Bichon Lovers,
We hope that you, your loved ones and FurKids are staying safe and healthy —and are preparing to celebrate the holidays and welcome in a happier and healthier 2025!
The adoption of our precious pups is one of the most enjoyable aspects of rescuing! Being able to see and hear, through photos and anecdotes, how our FurKids and their families grow together and bond is always so very special. As we have now entered our 20th year we are hearing from returning adopters and families. While it is sad having to ever say ‘Goodbye’ to any FurKid, being able to place another one or two with a loving family that we know from the past is another reward –and is deeply satisfying.

Our mission in rescue is to save lives – and that takes many forms. Sometimes it is as “straightforward” as interacting with a FurKid at the shelter, arranging a foster home, having an approved adopter waiting to meet and fall in love. Other times it involves medical treatments, trips to the vet or specialists, weeks or months of treatment or surgeries, recovering ….then meeting and falling in love. And some times, as you will learn when you read the story of Chipper, it takes dedication, medical treatments and lots of prayers to take a pup who ‘could’ have been paralyzed for life yet whose spirit and determination, combined with a dedicated foster mom (our Foster Coordinator Lauren Partida) and the commitment of BFK, to truly turn his life around. Read Chipper’s story on pages 1-3.)
Each and every Bichon Bash creates memories and experiences for all of us! Each year we see familiar faces and also have the opportunity to create new friendships. Celebrating our precious pups and their adopters, raising money to continue to save lives, is the purpose behind the Bichon Bash. Please ‘join us’ on pages 4-7 for a sampling of the photos taken at this year’s Bash. And please watch for a date and location in San Diego for the 2025 Bichon Bash!
And what would the new year be like without our very special Bichon FurKids calendar? Each year we challenge ourselves to see if we can design a calendar as good as the previous one — and each year we seem to do ‘one up’ on the previous year’s efforts. The 2025 calendar is a tribute to those amazing muscle cars that many of us grew up with (and loved!) and some very special FurKids who have stolen our hearts along the way. We hope the calendar will put a smile on your face and that you will purchase one or more for friends and family. The information to place your order is on page 8.
With the end of the year approaching, we want to reach out to let you know about a need for more volunteer drivers and home safety checkers. Both roles are critical to our ability to help FurKids – and are done at your convenience. For more information and to let us know you want to help, please review the articles on pages 9 and 10.
As always, we invite you to help us to continue with our mission. We see more pups arriving at shelters and many being turned away as the shelters are over capacity! These precious pups are looking for their forever homes– and we would love for them to be adopted by members of the BFK community. We always need and welcome both new and returning fosters. If this is something you want to do, please email marti@bichonfurkids.org or sylvia@bichonfurkids.org. We will get back to you right away. And KNOW that you can truly make a difference!
Lastly, we know there is a ‘transition’ period for every FurKid we rescue and adopt. Some very wise people developed the information that is included on page 11.
